CAMELLIA

  • Light:
☀️ Partial shade to full shade. Camellias prefer a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in hotter climates. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch their leaves. Ideal light conditions help them thrive and produce vibrant blooms.

    Water:
💧 Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Camellias prefer regular watering, especially during dry periods, but be sure the soil drains well to avoid root rot. Water deeply when the soil feels dry to the touch, and reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is dormant.

    Soil:
🌱 Acidic, well-draining soil. Camellias prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Rich, loamy soil that is slightly moist is ideal for these plants. You can amend your soil with organic matter or peat moss to improve its acidity and drainage.

    Temperature:
🌡️ Prefers cooler temperatures between 50°F and 70°F (10°C - 21°C). Camellias are cold-hardy in USDA zones 7-9. They can tolerate frost but may need protection in regions with harsh winters. Avoid planting in areas where temperatures frequently drop below freezing.

    Humidity:
💦 Moderate humidity. Camellias thrive in moderate humidity and do well in the average humidity levels of most homes. If you live in a dry climate, occasional misting can help provide some moisture to the air, or you can place a humidity tray nearby.

    Fertilizer:
🌼 Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins and again after flowering. Use a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants or camellias. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can burn the roots. Reduce feeding in late fall and winter.

    Pruning:
✂️ Prune after flowering to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches. Light pruning can help maintain the plant's size and encourage more blooms the following season. Avoid heavy pruning, as Camellias bloom on older wood, and cutting too much can impact flower production.

    Flowers:
🌸 Camellias bloom in winter to early spring, producing large, colorful flowers in shades of pink, red, or white. They are known for their stunning, rose-like blooms.
